Once you have picked a topic, you must hone it in on something specific and develop a thesis. Your thesis must be strong and make a claim that is debatable. Remember our discussions on a thesis, it is not enough to simply make a statement, you must explain why it is emblematic of critical thinking.

Bad thesis statement: Language is important to Latinx writers.

Good thesis statement: Language is important to Latinx writers because of the role it plays in the development of one’s identity, linking the two (language and identity), and crossing the lines of formality and informality.

FOLLOW FORMAT

  • You will be doing an annotated bibliography on six (6) outside sources. This bibliography will reflect the detailed research you have done in preparation for this paper. Your sources must be peer reviewed, scholarly, and academic. Periodicals will not satisfy this requirement. The annotated bibliography will follow this model:
  • Proper MLA citation
  • Brief summary of source in your own words (do not cut and paste the abstract as this is plagiarism and will result in disciplinary action)
  • Here is an example:

Lamott, Anne. Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life. Anchor Books, 1995.

Lamott’s book offers honest advice on the nature of a writing life, complete with its insecurities and failures. Taking a humorous approach to the realities of being a writer, the chapters in Lamott’s book are wry and anecdotal and offer advice on everything from plot development to jealousy, from perfectionism to struggling with one’s own internal critic. In the process, Lamott includes writing exercises designed to be both productive and fun.
