Discrimination, for all the laws and marches, still exists, and probably will always exist. Sometimes the very tools designed to fight discrimination are the instruments of discrimination, such as every time we are asked to complete the form that puts people into a specific category. We normally think of discrimination as negative, but is it always negative? Does that form help some people? In recent years we’ve become hypersensitive to discrimination. What, then, is all of this doing to society as a whole and to those being discriminated against in particular? Keep in mind these questions are to get you thinking about the topic. You are not to treat them as individual parts of your paper.

Essay Focus:

Choose a specific area of discrimination that interests you. Be sure that you narrow the area down to specific group. Define the discrimination, analyze the issues surrounding it, and draw your own conclusions as to how the discrimination impacts the person and the society.

Essay Requirements

      • 3 full pages of content and a works cited page
      • 3 academic sources from the BC databases
      • each source must be directly quoted at least once in the paper
        • additionally, you may use one summary or paraphrase from one of your sources
      • use MLA format
      • include a works cited page as the last page of the paper.
        • entries are in alphabetical order

Step One–Proposal

Your proposal should provide the following information in a well-developed, 3-5 sentence paragraph.

  • Identify your topic
    • What form of discrimination is the focus of your research paper?
  • Why did you choose your topic?
    • Did you do any reading to help you come up with the topic? Is it something personal to you?
  • What do you hope to prove about this form of discrimination?
