Essay #1 Analysis of Article

The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate your ability to analyze other author’s essays, so that you can develop skills that help you to be an effective writer.  This process allows you to understand what are the keys elements and devices that make an essay and its claims effective.  You will then use this in your own writing in this course and in future.

Remember an effective writer crafts his or her words and vocabulary for their intended audience. You will be writing this paper for your classmates and your professor, so make sure you write for this audience. We have all read the articles before , so you don’t need to worry about summarizing the content of the article.

In this essay, you will choose to analyze one of the articles that we read from your textbook, Successful College Writing 7th Edition, or library database article.

  • “The New Marshmallow Test:  Students Can’t Resist Multitasking” (p.3)
  • “Superhero or Supervillain? If Science Gives People Superpowers, Will They Use them for Good or Evil” (p.38)
  • “Internet Addiction” (p.132)
  • “The Future of College is Online”  (see Blackboard)
  •  “The U.S. Government Was Not Adequately Prepared for Coronavirus at Home or Abroad” (see Blackboard)
  • “The United States Needs the Electoral College Than Ever Before” (see Blackboard)
  • “The Case Against the Electoral College is Stronger Than Ever”(see Blackboard)

In this essay, please analyze

  1. Rhetorical Triangle:  Content, Audience and Purpose
  2. Rhetorical Appeals:  Ethos, Logos and Pathos
  3. Author’s Language and Organization

This essay should be 3-4 pages and have a strong thesis that makes a claim about how effective the author was in supporting his or her claim.  Please provide evidence and support in your body paragraphs to show analysis of the article.  Each body paragraph should have paraphrases or quotes to support the analysis.

Please use paraphrases and direct quotations within the body of your paper. In addition, please note that you need to use beginning and ending quotation marks around direct quotes. Provide documentation after any quotes with a parenthetical citation containing either page or paragraph number where the quote is located. Page or paragraph number should also be used after any paraphrased ideas from the essay. The format for page is simply the number—i.e. (45). If using paragraph numbers, simply follow the format (par. 5). These are just hypothetical examples. Pick one style and keep it consistent throughout your essay.

Please note that it is not necessary to include a list of sources at the end of the paper, as you have only one primary source for this paper. However, you will want to incorporate the name of the article and the full name of the author in your introduction. Once you have presented the author’s full name in your introduction, subsequent references to the author in the body of the essay can be by last name only.

Essay Requirements:

  • MLA Formatted
  • Support from the article – paraphrases and quotations
  • Double space
  • Time New Roman font 12 point
  • Free of grammar issues
