  1. Read: The article by Ennis B. Edmonds, “Dread ‘I’ In-a-Babylon: Ideological Resistance and Cultural Revitalization,” (pp. 23-34) attached above.
  2. Write:  Based on the Edmonds article, if you were to write a Reggae song text that voiced key important ideas, themes, terms, and historical references for Rastafarians, what would they be and why would you include each?
  • Length of paper: your paper must be a minimum of four (4), double-spaced, pages using a standard font and size (12 point).  
  • Upload your Paper as a MS Word file (.doc or .docx).  If you are using a Mac, convert any Pages or other app’s file to MS Word.  Do not submit Zip files.
  • Your Listening/Analysis/Issues Paper 1 must be uploaded/submitted by Thursday, February 5 by 11:00 PM.
  • This Paper is worth 50 points and you are allowed one attempt.
    • Papers receiving 30 points or less must be rewritten for re-grading.  Rewrites are due 1 week following the return of comments and grade.
  • To submit your Paper, please click the assignment title (Listening/Analysis/Issues Paper 1), above, to upload your Word document to submit your Paper. Include “LAI Paper 1” and your name in the file name to ensure you receive credit for submitting your assignment (example: LAI Paper 1_Jane_Smith.doc).

The following Grading Rubric will be used for all Listening/Analysis/Issues Papers.

 

Clarity of purpose, topic, and theme (10%)
It should be clear to your reader what you are specifically discussing. Analytical writing should be explicit and focused. Be wary of having only a general sense of what you want to discuss. Some sentence early in the paper should offer your major, overriding insight—your thesis statement—the point around which the whole paper adheres.
