Analyze the role/purpose of Victor in “Phoenix.”
Some things you might consider: The loss of his father leads him to seek assistance (from the tribal council, from Thomas) and then, in the course of the story, to reflect on his own identity and that of his community. What do you think his agreement to the “fair trade” reveals about where Victor is at the end of this story? Do you think the trip has changed him or his relationship to Thomas? Is he treating Thomas like a friend, by the end, despite his “sad” self-assessment to the contrary a little earlier? Why or why not?
