1) Write an essay on the topic below. Make sure you respond exactly to what the question asks.
2) Follow MLA format for your essay. Use 1” margins and double space everything, including your personal information on page 1 and your Works Cited entries. Do not use a separate title page. Consult a writing or style guide if you’re unsure about MLA format, or refer to the On-line Writing Lab at Purdue University:
3) Include a separate Works Cited page.
4) State your thesis in the opening paragraph. The thesis statement should be one or two direct and specific sentences that tell the reader what you will claim or argue in your essay. Avoid generalizing or excessive storytelling in forming your argument, but use specific and pertinent examples from the stories to support your points.
5) Use 2 – 3 brief quotations (less than 20 words each) from each story. Document your quotations following MLA format.
6) Proof-read carefully to eliminate any obvious errors.

Respond to the following topic:
In James Joyce’s “Araby” and in Katherine Mansfield’s “The Garden Party,” the two main characters experience an epiphany or moment of revelation that causes them to see their worlds and possibly themselves differently than they had previously.
State specifically what each character discovers and discuss the way that events in each story lead inevitably to their discovery.
