Since we are summarizing an important scene demonstrating key success factors for Dorothy Vaughan or Katherine Johnson in Margot Lee Shetterly’s, Hidden Figures, which is a historical biography, our language will sound different from S & R #1-3, which were summaries for academic articles. Be sure to read the attached directions for our S & R #4 carefully, and use the Writing Frame Pg 3-5 to help organize your ideas. For our S & R #4 we will:
- Write a summary of an important scene demonstrating key success factors for Dorothy Vaughan or Katherine Johnson in Hidden Figures from the Prologue through Ch. 9.
- Choose details and example quotes from the same scene on the same page, such as the page 12 discussion of key mentors in Vaughan’s life when she was younger which helped her to excel in school and led to later success at the university level, or the page 70-71 discussion of key mentors in Johnson’s life when she was growing up, with her father giving excellent advice and teaching her to love math, which helped her to excel in school at a young age and led to later success at the university level.
- Be sure to review our Week 6Module Quote Sandwich Handout. Then, in order to write an effective summary of thisimportant scene, include the main idea for the whole book in the first intro. sentence, followed by 2 quote sandwiches describing a pivotal success factor scene for Dorothy Vaughan or Katherine Johnson. Provide clear points and quote context in your own words, support quotes with signal phrases and correct MLA citations, as well as quote commentary in your own words, ending with a wrap up sentence for smooth summary finish. Make sure the quotes are from the same page (within a page or two is o.k. as long as this is developing the same point about a specific mentor, or a scene demonstrating growth mindset, or deliberate practice).
- For our response paragraph, be sure to review our Week 4 Module Logos, Pathos, Ethos Video and Rhetorical Appeals Handout. Then write a clear response which involves a rhetorical analysis of the types of appeals Shetterly uses to make her writing effective, including logos, pathos, and/or ethos. Be sure to choose your details and examples fromthe first section of her book, the Prologue to Ch. 9. Include 2 quote sandwiches demonstrating her effective use of logos, pathos, and/or ethos, each with a point, quote context, support quote, and quote commentary, as well as a wrap up sentence.
