ENGL 1020-946: Project Proposal

In the first weeks of class you have selected a topic, developed a research question, and gathered sources for your project. For the Project Proposal, you will write as if addressing a real-world audience on your chosen topic: the Appalachian Student Research Forum. The Forum is described as “an annual event in which dual enrollment, undergraduate, graduate, recent graduate and medical students as well as post-doctoral fellows and medical residents present their research in a formal, juried setting. The Forum is open to students from all colleges and universities within the southern Appalachian region” (https://www.etsu.edu/studentresearch/default.php).

The Project Proposal consists of three parts: the Proposal, the Review of Literature, and the Statement of Purpose.

1)In the proposal, you should introduce your topic, providing any relevant background information or history, and offer an overview of how you plan to approach it in your research project. What is the focus and scope of your topic?

2)In the review of literature, you should discuss the sources you have encountered in your research and explain the arguments scholars have presented and why these sources are relevant to your project.

3)Finally, in the statement of purpose, you should formally declare your argument (thesis statement) and explain what you plan to accomplish in your essay. Be sure your statement answers the “So what?” question, explaining the relevance of your research and how you will contribute to scholarship in that field.

The Revised Project Proposal should be between 3 and 5 well-developed paragraphs (750-1000 words) in Times New Roman 12 point double-space font with MLA formatting and include a works cited page.

ØThe Project Proposal Rough Draft is due Tuesday, October 20, by 11:59 pm, to the dropbox on D2L and is worth 25 points.

ØIn addition to submitting your rough draft to the dropbox on D2L, you also need to post it to the Peer Review Workshop 2 discussion board. The peer review assignment will be posted to the discussion board, is due Tuesday, October 27, by 11:59 pm, and is worth 25 points.

ØThe Revised Project Proposal is due Tuesday, November 3, by 11:59 pm to the dropbox on D2L and is worth 100 points.
