Sources: Choose one source from there, as the first primary source: Anton Chekhov, short stories: The Lady with the Dog, 1899, The Darling, 1899 Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own, 1929 Gustave Flaubert, Madame Bovary: Provincial Ways, 1856 Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina, 1878, The Kreutzer Sonata, 1889 Virginia Woolf, Mrs Dalloway, 1925

Your final essay should be 8-10 pages (2000 to 2500 words Times New Roman 12, double space) paper – an analysis of a theme of the chosen prompt as presented in one of the novels we read. The essay must contain: 1) an intro presenting your theme/topic and a particular angle it takes within your chosen text, 2) a body with several paragraphs, each citing from the text and performing a close reading, 3) a conclusion, summarizing your take out of reading the novel.

In your analysis you should identify

– what genre and literary movement the text belongs to

– what narrative strategies (perspective, direct/indirect speech), literary devices/figurative means the author uses, how and to what effect

– what the connection of the novel’s imagery and characters to the larger theoretical concepts of the course are

Touching upon the questions of translation or transmediation will be an advantage – for A or A+

You should use one of the texts we read in class or propose your own text well in advance and confirm it with me. You can also use additional readings (theoretical articles) provided by me on Canvas or discussed and confirmed with me well in advance.
