Two parts of the discussion:
First part:
1. Spend closely investigating the 11 photos in this powerpoint presentation. Try to get a feel for the mood, tone, and atmosphere these photos create. How do these photos make you feel, and why? I attached a PDF file down.
2, Read the following short article: http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/5..
3. Take some time to think about this: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/46548/harle…
You will probably remember that the Hansberry takes the phrase A Raisin in the Sun from the Langston Hughes poem. By doing this, Hansberry directs our attention to the poem: Think about possible connections between the images from the South Side of Chicago in the 1940s and 50s, The Great Migration and this poem. It might help to write down your ideas.
4. Watch this Lorraine Hansberry Video:
the discussion question for the first part is :
1. Your responses and reactions to learning about/reviewing The Great Migration, images from the South Side of Chicago during the time period A Raisin in the Sun is set, listening to Langston, and the Hansberry video.
2. Based on these pre-reading materials, what are you predictions for this play? What do you think it will be about? What kinds of actions do you think might take place? How do you think this play is going to make you feel?
second part: then we talk about plot, we talk about the basics of what happens, the who, what, where, and when. When we talk about conflict, we talk about what drives the plot. What is it that keeps you moving from line to line, scene to scene. Conflicts can also be described as tensions. Sometimes, we see conflict broken down into these general categories:
* Human(s) vs. Human (s)
* Human vs. Self
* Human vs. society
* Human vs. nature
* Human vs. technology
Yes, these are very broad, and we can see that there is a lot of room in each conflict for many possibilities.
For our Discussion of A Raisin in the Sun, Act I, please discuss some of the central conflicts you can see working in the play. Remember, observations such as, “Mama is going to get a $10,000.00 check because Big Walter has died, but every family member has a different idea for what to do with the money,” is a plot observation. What are the potential conflicts within this observation. And there are conflicts that do not involve the money as well. It’s okay to be uncertain. Explore possibility.
