THE ART: Find a work of Creative Non Fiction that excites/startles/inspires/moves you. Dive deep. Write notes for yourself: are there phrases/images/sentences that intrigue you? Interesting approaches to drawing real-life characters, settings that stay with you, innovative approaches to narration? Read parts of it out loud. Look for things that teach you about your own writing and how you will develop it. Ask yourself how the writer created feelings, sensations and places in words and how they tie bigger social issues to personal concerns. Then dig in further.
THE CRAFT: Look to secondary sources – essays, interviews, book reviews, podcasts etc. – to learn more about that writer, subgenre, literary movement etc. Choose one Craft piece to pair with the Art piece for your PJ.
• For example, if you chose an essay by Roxane Gay [ART] and an interview in which she discusses writing about socio-political issues through a personal lens [CRAFT], how did the interview alter or deepen your understanding of the CNF piece?
• Your PJ can also include some reflection on why you chose the piece you did and how you have applied or expect to apply your new learning in your own creative process.
• Find a CNF piece on your own or copy/paste the url’s below into your browser to check out these resources:
