The Writing Prompt
Write a rhetorical analysis of one story found in Reclaiming Our Stories 2, answering these questions:
- What is the main idea or argument of the text? What is the author trying to accomplish in writing this text?
- How does the author support the main idea? (This is your chance to speak about rhetorical strategies!)
- Was the author effective in convincing you of their idea or argument? Why or why not?
The Writing Guidelines

- This essay should explore the analytical/rhetorical elements of the text that you pick as well as whatever outside connections (historical figures or events, current events, other texts we/you read) you want to make that you know about already (this is not a research paper. Only quote/reference ROS2 and your own knowledge
- The main question and theme should stick with the ROS2 essay you decide to analyze
- Write it in your own real voice, focusing on organizing and supporting your ideas to support your thesis well
-
- AXES paragraphs are preferred for most of your work
- Think about how you want the reader to discover what you’re trying to say: what do they need to understand first, second, third…?
- Consider how you build connections between your thesis and the rest of your paper. Is everything bringing back the reader to that main idea?
- Focus on a manageable idea given the scope of the assignment
- Transition effectively between texts and ideas
- Focus on analyzing how the author supports and presents their ideas (rhetoric!)
