ENG 114 UCLA Small Change the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted Essay

Background

In October, 2010, Malcolm Gladwell wrote, “Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not be Tweeted,” his critique of the role of social media in major social change, comparing it negatively to the great social justice movements of the past that have led to ending segregation, or that have overturned despotic rulers. At the time, many who had come to see the potential of social media criticized Gladwell’s argument, notably the co-founder of Twitter, Biz Stone, in an Atlantic article (Links to an external site.). But what has the decade since since Gladwell wrote his essay taught us about the effectiveness–and the perils–of social media activism? What are its drawbacks or pitfalls? Is it a useful tool? Powerful weapon? Instrument of propaganda? Anaesthetizing diversion? The ultimate expression of democracy?
