My topic proposal
1.Veterans – Although most of their medical care is covered, Veterans like my brother and friends find it difficult to find care in a timely manner. Wait times are extravagant and care is sometimes limited.
Professor Response
1.I like the personal aspect of the first idea. That will help you commit to the research.

Now that you’ve read “A Modest Proposal (Links to an external site.)” by Jonathan Swift, you should have a pretty good idea what a persuasive proposal looks like. You won’t be writing about Swift’s essay in your own essay, and you probably won’t be writing a satire. But Swift’s proposal is still a great example.
In Week Ten, we brainstormed topics all based on problems in San Antonio or your own local hometown or community. Last week, you should have decided on a topic that seems interesting to you.
HINT: Specific topics will work better than broad ones for this essay.
For example, homelessness in San Antonio is a huge topic with many facets–too large to be addressed in a single essay. But the increasing number of people, especially those in the service and hospitality industry, who have lost their homes due to evictions related to Covid-19 job losses would be more-focused and timely.
Your essay will be in the form of a problem-solution. This is basically 1) an argument of definition followed by 2) a causal argument followed by 3) a proposal.
For example, if you were to propose installing a traffic light at a specific intersection, you would first need to define why that intersection poses a problem without a light. Is the problem traffic congestion, safety, confusing existing signage, or maybe all of those things? Next, explain the cause of the current situation. Perhaps the recent development of housing communities has changed the traffic flow in that area. Then propose your solution. Argue why your proposal will solve all of those issues.
There’s another example on this week’s announcement. Week 12 – Drafting the Second Essay
You will need to do a little research on your chosen topic.
- What exactly and specifically is the problem?
- This will be the argument of definition part of your essay.
- What are the contributing factors to the problem?
- If you know or discover what caused the problem, then your essay will also contain some causal argument.
- (In some cases, you will not be able to determine the cause of the problem, so you will just need to explain that.)
- If you know or discover what caused the problem, then your essay will also contain some causal argument.
- What, if anything, has been done to address it?
- If previous attempts to solve the problem failed, why is that?
- Has your specific solution been proposed before?
- If so, why hasn’t it been implemented?
- In not, why not? Is it practical, affordable?
- Are there any concerns or drawbacks to your proposal?
Your essay will probably not be a political satire like Jonathan Swift’s; however, I’d like you to use his essay as inspiration.
This essay is an opportunity for you to combine your formal writing skills with three types of argumentation: definition, causality, and proposal.
