ENG 102 CVCC Miss Emilys Character A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner Essay

Write an essay (5 paragraphs min.) critically analyzing a character in a short story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner. After reading the story carefully, you should have several major impressions about the character you’ve chosen. A character is made up of many different characteristics, after all. Your job, however, is to choose ONE characteristic and craft an argument about it. To find your argument, think about why a character has a particular characteristic or how a characteristic is the cause of a character doing something (likely strange!), whether that be leaving home, killing a lover, living at the P.O., etc.

Your thesis must:

Identify one key characteristic/aspect of the character’s personality AND ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

Argue how that characteristic/aspect drives the character and/or impacts the outcome of the story

OR, in some cases, argue what caused the character to have that particular personality trait

**In addition to the story (your primary source), you must find at least ONE secondary source to help support your argument. That means you’ll have a total of at least TWO sources on your Works Cited page and in-text citations to match them all in the body of the paper.** Must use Alabama Virtual Library for research. Websites such as Sparknotes, Bartleby, Shmoop, Pink Monkey, GradeSaver, Wikipedia, Enotes, Answers.com, etc. are off-limits. Instead, find (within the library’s books or online databases) scholarly articles/books written by literary critics.
