ENG 101 Logical Reasoning Statements Paper

Please use the is book; The Norton Field Guide to Writing, 5th ed. by Richard Bullock

On Monsters by Stephen Asma

In this mini-lesson, we will focus on the building blocks of logical reasoning.

So, go ahead, and read pages 398-400 in the blue textbook.

Then, write a roughly five sentence summary of the most important, useful points in these two pages.

Then, using the explanations about claims in these two pages, go ahead and write a claim, and then a thesis statement based on that claim. The claim should be general (example to follow, and another below). In order to create a thesis from your claim, you will need to come up with supporting points, which you may find through asking questions, and then using your knowledge or doing a little research to answer them…Example: claim: we should continue online classes at the college-level. Question: Why? Because students save time and money, because many college students have families and jobs, because the Coronavirus may still be a threat, because students can do work in their own time. Thesis from all that: We should continue online classes at the college level because it a convenient, money-saving and safer option for many working college students with families.

You might write your claim, and then thesis about the image you plan to analyze for your essay, or you might write one about an issue you find on this site, procon.org.

Remember, a claim/thesis is your opinion about something, but it is supported by different types of evidence like common sense, facts, data, examples and anecdotes. We will get to some of this later, but, for now, use the two pages of reading to write a claim and then a thesis based on that claim.

Another example: claim: we need free lunches in schools.

Thesis: Due to the financial struggles of many families, and the necessity of food for learning, K-12 schools should offer free lunches to students.
