Writing Task
In an essay of at least 1,200 words (about 4-5 pages), choose a topic that has opposing sides. You’ll need to locate two essays on the same topic in order to answer ONE of the following questions. One of the essays can be one of the assigned readings listed above.
If the two essays agree on the topic, then your thesis or primary claim will be about one of the key differences in their arguments.
If the two essays disagree on the topic, then your thesis or primary claim will be about one of the key areas of common ground between them.
You will need to include a brief summary of each argument, and you should summarize the arguments on the same basis (content or structure). If you’d like to use one of the topics that have already been assigned to you, you may use one of the essays you’ve been assigned to read. However, you’ll need to locate another essay besides the ones you’ve been assigned. You may not simply use two of the assigned readings listed above. You may use additional outside sources to help you make your argument, but the primary claim and the overall focus of your essay should be limited to just the two main arguments.
Use MLA format when introducing and citing sources, including the assigned reading. You will also need to include a Works Cited list that includes all of the outside sources you used in your final draft.
