part 1: Choose a topic in endocrinology for your final topic summary assignment. Find and turn in two scientific papers (which will be your references) as well as a short description of your topic and why you chose it. At least one article you choose should have been published in the last 3 years (2019-2021).
You only have to write a sentence or two about your topic. We just want to know what the topic is, so we can give feedback. If multiple people pick the same very broad topic (like “diabetes”) we may ask you to focus on one specific aspect of the topic.
Some example topic ideas include:
- Hormonal diseases
- Environmental issues affecting hormones in humans or wild animals
- Major questions in endocrinology today (for example, how x hormone works to cause y effect in body)
For example, my topic could be how byproducts of birth control medication in waterways affect animals. I could choose one paper that tests the effects of these byproducts on frogs in a lab setting, and a second paper that quantifies the amount of byproduct entering the waterways.
part 2: Write a medium-length (about 400 words, can be a bit shorter or longer) post about your chosen topic. You must use 1-3 scientific, peer-reviewed articles as main references; your grade will be based on the number of references used. At least one of your references must have been published in the last three years (2019-2021).
To receive an A, you must use at least 3 reference articles. If you use only 2 references, you can receive a B at best, and if you only use 1 reference, you can receive a C at best.
This assignment is graded as complete or incomplete. To receive a complete, you must receive at least a “proficient” rating in each section of the rubric below. I will leave specific feedback for you to revise if you receive an incomplete grade. You may revise and resubmit the assignment up to 2 times to receive a complete grade. See the revision policy for instructions: Revision Policy
Write your post for a general audience, not just for endocrinologists or experts in the particular system. Tell a story about the topic you chose. Why is this topic interesting or important? What are scientists doing to address this topic, and what have we learned so far?
