Endings are often full of emotional risk for both counselors and clients. Often a client and counselor develop a strong, effective, trust-filled relationship; it hurts to end such a powerful and important connection. Being intentional about how you initiate termination with a client helps put the grieving associated with saying good-bye in proper perspective. This is a time to consolidate the learning and growth that occurred during the counseling process. In order to encourage a client’s retention of his or her therapeutic learning, the counselor needs to engage the client’s attention in a powerful way. How do you send a client away from a counseling session or a counseling relationship with a clear idea of what he or she gained and how to maintain what he or she achieved?
Post by Day 4 a description of one creative way of helping a client remember valuable insights and/or experiences that she or he can apply to post-counseling life after either a counseling session or a counseling relationship terminates.
