EN 209 Unit One Exam
Write two separate essays of at least 400 words answering the prompt for each topic. All answers need to be in MLA format and include an introduction, conclusion, and a clear thesis statement. Your essays should include direct quotes from the text. Quotes should be no more than 2-3 lines and be accompanied by a supporting analysis.
SECTION ONE
OPTION A:
Write an essay analyzing the role of the Good Mind and the Bad Mind in the “Iroquois Creation Story.” What do their conflicting roles say about the Iroquois Confederation’s view of collaboration between nations? How does this differ from the Biblical creation story that the Founding Fathers would have been familiar with? You might consider discussing why the Norton Anthology chooses to open with this text.
SECTION TWO
OPTION A:
Pick either John Smith’s General Historie of Virginia or Mary Rowlandson’s A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration and write an essay discussing the way the text frames the early colonial’s encounters with the Native Americans. Consider the text’s rhetorical situation. How might the audience have affected these narratives? How are the Native Americans portrayed? Are there moments when the narrator seems conflicted about how to view the Native Americans?
