Chapter 4:
The Mone-London organization model, depicted in Figure 4.1, applies to leading teams just as it applies to leadingoneselfand direct reports, and furtherserves to preview what we will address in this chapter. Leaders play a number of roles in relationto teams, including the overarching roles of team director, facilitator, and developer. The organization, usually in the form of senior leadership, sets the initial, high-level expectations for the team, and it is up to the team leader to work with the team’s members to clarify and establish the team’s purpose and goals. Broadlyspeaking, the key competencies team leadersneed to demonstrate are preparing to lead a team and taking the lead. Enablers of successful team leadership includehaving high levels of trust, the capacity to learn, team member empowerment, and ensuring the necessary team leader and team member roles are executed as necessary. In this chapter, these enablers will be addressed within the appropriate steps (there are eight steps, as follows) for creating and leadingwhat Londonand London(2007) refer to as a high-performing team. The first four are for preparation, signifying that the leader needs to reflect on what the team will need to get startedand perform well. The secondfour steps are implementation steps. These steps include: Preparing to Lead a Team Step1: Identifying the type of team you are leadingand challenges the team may face.
