Employee Motivation – Just Whose Responsibility Is It Anyway?

It’s rather intuitive and virtually universally agreed upon that motivated employees with a good attitude will be more productive, leading to overall personal satisfaction and ultimately, organizational success. Therefore, management literature is replete with advice on how to increase employee motivation.

But is it that simple? Just whose responsibility is employee motivation? As it turns out, opinions vary

After reading the articles and watching the videos, what do you think? Who is responsible for employee motivation? Answer that question in a thoughtful post of at least 500 words.

Respond to at least one of the following in your post:

  • What motivational theories do you believe reflect the truth about motivation in the workplace? What ones miss the mark? Why? Be specific.
  • What parts of the articles and TedTalks did you agree with? What parts did you disagree with?
  • How effective are organizational behavior management programs in improving employee motivation? Does this always improve performance? Explain your answer.
  • What has your own experience been? In what job were you highly motivated? In what job were you not very motivated? How did your manager’s behavior contribute to those situations?

Return to this discussion activity throughout the module week and reply with meaningful comments to a minimum of one of your colleagues.
