1. The transition from an academic student to a graduate nurse can be a difficult one. When looking at the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for nurses, the two provisions that I believe will help me with this transition are:
Provision 1: “The nurse practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of every person.” (ANA, 2015) I believe this is an important provision because, it is vital to both patient care and essential for creating a positive work environment. By simply providing each patient compassion and respect, it makes them feel more comfortable with the nurse and essentially builds a trusting relationship. Without establishing a trusting relationship with the patient, they hold back information, and it limits the level of care they can receive. Compassion and trust are also important when working with fellow nurses. Nurses must be able to effectively work with one another, if there is no trust and compassion within the working field, then it can affect patients care.
Provision 3: “The nurse promotes, advocates for, and protects the rights, health, and safety of the patient.” (ANA, 2015) In nursing school, we are constantly taught to be an advocate for our patients, to know what rights they have, and ensure they are always safe. The transfer from a student to a graduate can be a difficult one, but by acting out this provision can instantly make you a more successful nurse. Advocating for your patient can also protect their rights and keep them from harm’s way.
I chose the two provisions listed about because they are a big portion of what I learned, and I was constantly reminded of them each term. Just by providing compassion, respect, and being our patients’ advocate, it will make me more successful as a graduate nurse.
2. As I transition from being an academic student to being a newly graduated nurse in clinical practice, two provisions that can fully help me are Provisions Number one and two. Number one states that “The nurse practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of every person.” While the second one says that “the nurse’s primary commitment is to the patient, whether individual, family, groups, community, or population.”
By understanding these, making sure that I put them into practice, I will be capable of providing high-quality care to my patients while uplifting their dignity and self-worth. At the same time, I am also able to relate well with colleagues or people that I will work with. As I transition, it will bear in mind that my duty will always be for the welfare of my patients, and therefore, exercising utmost professionalism coupled with compassion can be my great tools as I begin to join the workforce.
Schmit et al. (2017) stated that as academic student transitions to being practicing professionals, taking into consideration the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics should be the compass and anchor of every nurse.
My personal life, as well as my circumstances, should not in any way limit nor prohibit me from rendering my duties and responsibilities. I am no longer an individual who can act just the way I want to, but I am now an individual who should always exercise caution for the benefit of every people I meet.
