3 pages Research Paper Response 1 – Hosoda, Stone-Romero, and Coats
For this assignment, you should first read the following paper (available through Desire2Learn):
Hosoda, M., Stone‐Romero, E. F., & Coats, G. (2003). The effects of physical attractiveness on job‐
related outcomes: a meta‐analysis of experimental studies. Personnel Psychology, 56(2), 431-462.
For the assignment, focus on the following elements of the paper. Abstract, introduction (pages 431 –
433), theoretical model (pages 433 – 436), meta-analysis process (pages 440 – 443, please include a
brief 1-2 paragraph description of what a meta-analysis is as well as a discussion of this particular metaanalysis), and the hypotheses tested (and the results of those tests). You do not have to discuss the
particular statistical techniques used in each analysis (for example, the meta-analysis process, regression
analysis, and specific calculations) or the individual studies included in the meta-analysis (you can
exclude Table 1). Instead, focus on the results (Tables 2 and 3). Were the correlations significant? Were
the relationships positive or negative? How much of the variation did the variables explain? What do
these results mean in the real world? Can you make any decisions based on these results?
Your discussion of the results themselves should include the key ideas or findings, as well as any findings
that were particularly interesting (for example, highly applicable results, counterintuitive results, etc.).
Save your discussion of how these results may be applied for the next section, the discussion of results
should be focused on simply describing the results themselves.
Ultimately, we would like to use research results to drive real-world behavior. Your paper should include
a section on how you would use the information from the paper in an organization. This may be in terms
of human resources activities (hiring, promotion, education, development, etc.) or might have other
applications, such as compensation, leadership, or many others.
Finally, your paper should indicate any concerns you have about using the study results. Are you
comfortable with the study design? Were the study participants representative of the general
population? Are the results usable?
