The isntructions for this assignment, tell you to reflect/construct the article around the Discussion Thread: Research Topic. Here is my post for that assignment:
The educational research topic that is of interest to me is how to effectively integrate research-based behavioral and social/emotional supports within the RTI process. From the first day I walked through the doors of my first job in education, I knew that the population of students needed more intervention than what they were receiving. These students were sent to a satellite school provided by their school district, usually referred to as an alternative school, for behavioral concerns. From that day over 15 years ago, I always wondered, “How did they end up here? What systems were attempted at their homeschool? Did their school fail them or is this just their nature?” Coming full circle to my topic for a potential dissertation, I still find this topic elusive. There is not much research out there on this specific topic.
In light of my biblical worldview, the S-C-R-I-P is the perfect disposition for this research topic. The educational system has a Social responsibility to intervene and place interventions that are effective in place for students struggling with behavioral and emotional needs. The level of commitment that educators must devote to these students is intensive and ever -changing based on the needs at their particular schools. Once data is collected on an effective program to implement at the Tier 1 level of the RTI process, time will be required to analyze that data and use reflective practices to fine-tune procedures. When implementing a program geared toward the mental health of students, a sense of integrity must exist. A moral code is what guides us to ethically put practices in place in order to help those with mental health concerns so that they can learn more successfully in the school setting. What they learn in a school setting will eventually be generalized so that students can become functioning citizens, hopefully able to contribute to society. Lastly, professionalism must be maintained in order to implement strategies and programs dealing with the interventions for students with behavioral and emotional issues. As educators, one would think professionalism comes easy. It does not.
I believe through my research; new truths will arise that there are not consistent measures implemented with fidelity and accuracy in the RTI process at Tier 1 for students with behavioral and emotional concerns prior to special education referral.
As the bible tells us in Genesis 1:27, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Before educators can even begin to address the behavioral and emotional needs of their students, they need to fully understand that all humans were created in God’s image and we need to love them as they are. That is not to say that their behavior is correct, but their behavior can be molded. Mental health is on a steady decline with school-aged children in today’s system. Instead of placing such emphasis on academic success, maybe we should focus first on them as humans.
