The reading this week discusses several aspects of motivation including:

  • intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation
  • drive
  • need for arousal
  • need for approval
  • need for competence
  • need for autonomy
  • need for relatedness
  • need for belonging
  • motive for success
  • motive to avoid failure
  • sense of identity
  • disposition
  • self-efficacy
  • interests
  • expectancies and values
  • goals
  • attributions

You also learn about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, which provides a perspective on motivation that is not often studied in the context of school yet has clear implications for learning; motivation for school requires that students are not overly concerned by their basic, safety, belonging, or even esteem needs.

For this paper, consider the various aspects of motivation listed above, including Maslow’s hierarchy, and how they relate to the students featured in Freedom Writers. Then, choose at least four of aspects you believe are most evident in these students. Describe the aspects you’ve chosen and provide examples from the film that support your choices. Finally, what do you believe were the most successful techniques Erin Gruwell used to motivate her students and turn around their attitudes and beliefs?  Discuss at least two techniques.
