EDU 153 Pitt Safety Policies & Guidelines Replacement for Adult Supervision Questions

Introduction:

In Chapter 8 you studied Safety Management while in Chapter 9, you studied Management of Injuries and Acute Illness. Below are a few questions that you will discuss as a group.  Answer the questions in your own post, then reply to two peers whose answers differ from yours.  Provide feedback to their answers (did you agree or not agree, and explain why – offer ideas, suggestions, etc.).  All 3 questions must be answered and discussed in length to receive full credit.

The Prompt:

1. Discuss why safety policies and guidelines must not be considered a replacement for adult supervision.  Provide at least one example.

2. Explain why a child who has fallen and bumped his head must be closely monitored for the next 48 hours despite the fact that he appears to be okay.  How would you notify the parent of this accident (please use a word-for-word statement of what you would say to the parent)?

3. Assume that you are the teacher in the following scenarios.  Role-play how you would respond to 2 of the following (please identify which scenarios you are role-playing in your DB):

Child is having a nose bleed

Child appears to be experiencing a seizure

Toddler is choking on a bead that she found on the floor

Child is having an acute asthma attack

Child was pushed off of a piece of playground equipment and fell several feet to the ground; child appears disoriented, is pale, and has cool, clammy skin

Respond to the following Posy

by Madison Joyner

Safety policies and guidelines are written guidelines on a piece of paper, nothing can take the place of having an adult supervising and be present first hand if an injury occurs.  Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death and causes of permanent disability in young children.  If an adult is present and is there to offer immediate first aid the chances of death or permanent disability is greater.  Children should be observed for 24-48 hours after falling with a head injury because it can take hours for the severity of the injury to show.  I would notify the parents by :  Good morning Ms. Joyner, this is Madison from Ms. Maddie’s Playland.  I’m sorry but Jessie fell off the jungle gym on the playground and he has a small bump on the back of his head.  He seems to be fine at the moment but please watch him for 48 hours.  Please contact his Dr or go to the emergency room if he has any vomitting. bleeding or clear fluid from his ears or nose, loss of consciousness, or becomes disoriented.  Again, at the moment Jessie is playing and appears fine.  3.  Child was pushed off playground equipment:  Due to the severity of this injury, I would remain calm, stay with the child, have a coworker call 911 and also call the parents to meet us at the hospital.  Child appears to be having a seizure:  If this is the first I would call 911, I would keep myself calm and keep the other children calm.  I would lower the child down into a side lying position, protecting the head.  I would make sure their is nothing in the way that could cause injury.  If this is not the first I would observe and make sure it did not last more than 3-4 minutes.  Always keeping a check on respiratory status.  Once the child has recovered and safety maintained I would notify the parents, if the child has to go tot he hospital I would have a co-worker to notify the parents to meet us at the hospital.
