Introduction:

Cognition pertains to the mind and how it works.  It is a system made up of three parts: cognitive functioning, cognitive structure, and cognitive development. Thus, cognition refers both to what the child knows and how the child thinks.  As educators, we must assess children frequently to guess what is happening in their minds based on what they do.  Therefore, there are a wide variety of theories and approaches to supporting children’s cognitive development.
