EC Substance Abuse Disease and Harm Reduction Model Research Paper

Based on the two texts, Beautiful Boy by David Sheff and Tweak by Nicholas Sheff, you will write a 5‐ to 7‐page paper that is focused on one of the questions/observations listed below. The paper should be double‐spaced, in 12‐point Times New Roman font, and have 1” margins and numbered pages, using APAStyle.

Choose ONE question from the following list of four questions to write your paper:

  1. What was the impact of Nic’s abuse on his family and community? Reflect on the consequences of his abuse and relate it to the stages of change that he was in at the time. Utilize at least three additional research sources to describe the family and community impacts. OR
  2. Nic experienced a number of relapses and rehabilitation attempts. Using rehabilitation readiness and stages of change research, analyze these attempts and identify possible reasons recovery was or was not successful at each attempt. What were three possible strategies to promote recovery that would be appropriate to engage with Nic based on his stage of change at the time? OR
  3. Nic’s attempts at rehabilitation and subsequent relapses have taken a toll on him personally. Research the personal impact of abuse (physical/psychological, social, legal, financial, vocational) and identify/describe these consequences in relation to Nic. What might be some recovery strategies that show promise for Nic? OR
  4. Research the differences between the disease model and the harm reduction model. Incorporate the importance of stages of change/treatment in relation to successful recovery attempts. How do these models assist in understanding Nic’s road to recovery as described by himself and his family?

You will need to include an introduction and a concluding statement. You will need to include 3-5 credible references, from the Excelsior Library and, as appropriate, from the professional websites.

I encourage you to use the following resources to ensure success in writing your paper.

Compose your work in a .doc or .docx file type using a word processor (such as Microsoft Word, etc.) and save it frequently to your computer. For those assignments that are not written essays and require uploading images or PowerPoint slides, please follow uploading guidelines provided by your instructor.
