Objective: Write a 3pg personal narrative about overcoming a difficulty, which you may define as you see fit. Choose something factual from your own life. Narrative and descriptive writing should be the focus of this essay, but you should also seek to make an “argument” of some kind. In other words, you are not simply telling a story for the sake of conveying a story; while entertaining your audience is one possible goal for this essay, you want to make sure you are making an ARGUMENT about something.
You may want to begin from two major starting points: 1) an idea or 2) an event/memory/incident. The more particular and original your idea the greater chance your essay will be successful (though that’s not to say you can’t write successfully on a common idea or event). In any case, write YOUR story, not someone else’s or a clichéd version of it. Give us your unique perspective. Allow your readers to relive your story.
