For your response, I want you to look at the teachings and example of Jesus and try to apply them to the world today. What effect do you think it would have on the world if people tried to actually practice what Jesus taught 2,000 years ago? In order to answer that question, please discuss at least two quotations from the readings for this week. Please understand that I am not asking for a sermon or a religious tract. Instead, I am asking you to set aside whatever preconceived notions you have about Jesus’ teachings (whether you’re a Christian, an atheist, or something else), to look seriously at them with fresh eyes, and to decide what would happen if people seriously practiced those teachings. For example, what would happen if people really did practice the kind of nonviolent philosophy that Jesus taught when he said that people should “turn the other cheek”? What does it mean to “love your enemies”? As with your other reading responses, please make sure that you address at least two quotations from the text.
