E-responses should be a way for you to process the readings and to help improve your
understanding and retention of class material. They are not intended to be research papers, but rather
informal writing that give you an opportunity to explore the readings, to challenge their assumptions,
to contextualize arguments, and to practice critical thinking and writing skills. Prompts are posted on
canvas.
In order to receive full credit, you must answer the question(s) in a way that demonstrates that you
have read the material. With that said, the e-responses should be fairly informal in style and should
not take too long to complete. A good way to make sure you receive full credit is to make sure you
respond directly to the prompt and not some imaginary question.
E-responses should be 250-300 words, although feel free to write more if you feel so inclined.
Also, please feel free to mention any concepts or terms that you did not understand from the
readings and I will try to address them in the next class.
Question 1: How did Alfred Marshall view efficiency? How was it similar to or different than Charles Darwin’s view of efficiency in nature?
Question 2: What does the term efficiency mean to you and how important do you think it is for an environmentally sustainable future?
