Writing assignments should be typed, double spaced, 12 pt. font, and free from grammatical errors. For each Chapter, use 2 paragraph format (7+ sentences per paragraph) to answer each question as thoroughly as possible. Submit your document in the Module 2 Writing Assignment Dropbox.
Chapter 3:
1. Pick a subculture or counterculture that you know nothing about. Do NOT choose one that is already in the textbook. Research this group. Give a summary of this culture and report at least 3 key facts about it (reference your sources). Then, identify specific symbols and language that this culture has and connect at least 2 textbook terms that connect to this group.
2. Do you believe that feelings of ethnocentricity or xenocentric attitudes and practices are prevalent in U.S. culture? Why do you believe this? What issues or events might influence your ideas about these concepts?
Chapter 4:
1. Research 3 facts that are known now from the effect of social media, cell phones, or computers on social interaction of individual people or society in general. List your findings and cite your references. Then explain how social media is good and bad for social interaction in a society.
2. Think of a self-fulfilling prophecy that you’ve experienced. Based on this experience, do you agree with the Thomas theorem? Use examples from current events to support your answer as well.
Chapter 5:
1. Watch the video under contents; “The Wild Child”. Answer these questions with in-depth content:
a. Describe the circumstances surrounding the discovery of “Genie”
b. Identify specifically the areas of development that Genie struggled with?
c. What aspects of socialization were missing that impacted her lack of development? Identify 3 specific terms from chapter 3 on socialization that connect to Genie and explain in writing how they connect to her socialization? Cite the page and write out the definition of these terms.
d. What traits from isolation did Genie and Victor have in common? Identify them all. Be specific here.
e. Explain the “critical period” hypothesis of language acquisition and how that related to Genie.
2. Watch the video on the Harlow Monkey video; From the textbook read the summary on Harlow’s experiment. How do the results with the monkey’s long term effects explain the impact of isolation on Geni? The focus here is not the mother; it is the results from isolation. Are there long term effects on development from isolation? Find one outside reference on this topic and cite it.
