I’m working on a history discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
Presidential Impeachment
Quite a number of Presidents have had to deal with Congressional investigations; Washington was the first President to be issued an order to release files for an investigation. Of course, while he, as well as many who followed him refused this order, there were investigations that went quite a bit further. For instance, Andrew Johnson, Lincoln’s successor, was impeached by the House of Representatives but the Senate failed to try him. Since that time, and certainly much more recently, it seems there is some kind of investigation ongoing within the government. Even as popular as he was among the people, even President Reagan was investigated during the Iran-Contra scandal. In his case, though, It is believed he managed to stave off impeachment proceedings because of the loyalty shown by those who surrounded him . . . As well as simply, shall we say, good housekeeping.
