I’m working on a english project and need guidance to help me learn.
ACT UP “Rhetorical Analysis”
Having watched the film How to Survive a Plague, fill out the following:
1. What was the aim of ACT UP? Describe in one sentence.
2. What are examples of specific actions they took or protests they mounted? List as many
examples from the film as you notice below:
3. Looking at the actions you have listed above, describe the group’s “rhetorical strategies” in a
healthy paragraph (at least five sentences). In other words, what principles or approaches
underline ACT UP’s actions? Do you detect inductive or deductive reasoning? What appeals
are there: to emotion (pathos), to logic (logos), to authority (ethos)? What tone do they use to
make their points heard? Etc.
4. At the end of the film, Larry Kramer says “Every single drug that’s out there is because of
ACT UP…. The government didn’t get us the drugs. No one else got us the drugs. We, ACT UP,
got those drugs out there.” Assuming he is right, how did the strategies you described in the
previous question lead to this success? Again, write your answer in a healthy paragraph.
