Homework # 1

How could constructivism be used in an integrated approach to teaching science and math? Explain.

What are some benefits and drawbacks of the expository, guided inquiry, and free discovery teaching methodologies? Discuss.

What is a social studies thematic unit you would like to use with your students?  Why do you feel this theme is important?  How could you use this theme to bridge the gap between home and school for social studies learning?

What are the assessments for the social studies text like for your school? Are they authentic or formal? What are some ways that you would like to assess your students’ understanding of social studies concepts?

Homework # 2

Using a graphic organizer of your choice, create a basic outline for a social studies theme that could be taught over the course of one month or longer.

Choose a topic that includes two or three units that flow in an orderly sequence. Display the unit titles in the graphic organizer with lesson titles, topics, and objectives that are aligned to the standards. Full lesson plans are not required.

Create a rationale statement as well as a student-friendly title for the entire theme.

Include sections on your graphic organizer for culminating activity ideas, field trips, guest speakers, and other resources, including literature.

Design at least two authentic assessments that address your topic; one formative and one summative.

Homework  # 3

Many of you are “looking ahead” at your week 8 benchmark assignment, and getting a head start is a great idea!

  • I want to provide a few tips that will hopefully assist you with your week 8, benchmark assignment:
  • A unit plan is not the same as a lesson plan. A unit plan can be designed to be taught for as long as a month or for as little as a week.  I suggest designing your unit plan for 5 days.
  • Your unit plan should include an integration of math and science. You can design you unit plan to focus on one math and one science objective or you can focus on one science objective and several math objectives. It’s important that your unit plan has an all-around connection/theme.
  • Make sure that I can clearly see each individual day, you can choose to complete your unit plan by doing 5 lesson plans and attaching them all together, but you are not required to  do that or use the lesson plan templates for this assignment.
  • Make sure that you clearly identify the science processes by highlighting, typing them in bold, or typing them in parenthesis throughout your unit plan. Be sure to identify the differentiation and assessments in your unit plan. Remember it is a unit plan so you may choose to not assess until the final day and that is okay.

Prepare this assignment according to the instructions in “EED-364 Integrating Science and Mathematics Benchmark Assignment and Rubric.” All coursework will inform this assignment.
