Your second essay is a longer paper that grants you the opportunity to closely examine some kind of food and ethics issue. Unlike the food narrative, this is a research-driven paper that must engage scholarly, peer-reviewed research.
Note: The first step of this project is to submit your Food and Ethics Paper Proposal & Annotated Bibliography. The second step will be to have a complete draft prepared for our peer review, held during class time.
Your paper must
-closely examine a food and ethics topic of your choosing; I have included a list of possible topic ideas below, but you are more than welcome to propose something different;
-draw on scholarly research (at least 7 different scholarly sources; you can also draw on major journalism from places like NPR, New York Times, etc. but that does not count toward the 7 scholarly sources)
-present a clear/central stance/argument on the issue (i.e.. you are not just reviewing all stances or opinions; you should be taking some kind of position on it and using research to back up that position;
-be 6-8 pages, NOT including Works Cited page (please do not go beyond 8 pages):
Topic Ideas:
-Food insecurity and a specific population/demographic (e.g. Black communities)
-Food insecurity and poverty
-Communities impacted by slaughterhouses (people who live near slaughterhouses)– their health, safety, higher rates of disease, etc.
-Inequality in land ownership
-Slaughterhouse workers (working conditions, safety, mental/physical health, or sanitation, etc.)
-Animal cruelty in the meat or dairy industry (don’t try to cover all animals; perhaps limit to either mammals, birds, or fish, etc.)
-Fair trade and social justice
-The meat or dairy industry and its impact on the environment / climate change, etc.
-Inequality and food system jobs / food workers
