1-For this week’s lecture activity, review the principles for designing controls and displays from the in-class lecture. Select one principle from the list of 15 principles for designing displays, describe the principle in your own words, and describe an example of a display that demonstrates that principle (in either a good or bad way). Do the same for one of the 15 priciples for designing controls. Attached is the lecture

2- Describe 1-2 insights/connections/revelations you had from the readings for each of the following topics:

  • the gulf of execution and evaluations
  • designing displays
  • designing controls

2. What, if any, material from the readings was unclear?

– Readings are attached with the below readings too

Required readings:

Norman, D. A. (1986). Cognitive engineering. User centered system design, 31, 61.

Proctor, R. W. (2018). Human factors in simple and complex systems. CRC press. (accessible through Drexel library)

  • Ch. 8 The Display of Visual, Auditory, and Tactual Information
  • Ch. 15 Controls and Controlling Actions

Vanderheiden, G. C., Jordan, J. B., & Lazar, J. (2021). Design For People Experiencing Functional Limitations. Handbook Of Human Factors and Ergonomics, 1216-1248.

  • Focus on Sections 1-3 (p. 1-5) and section 9 (P. 14-28)
