My part is to write examples of companies who market ethically.
The turn of the millennium brought its share of threatening economic, social, and ecological challenges. Nevertheless, business school teaching cases are almost exclusively focused on ‘best practices’ or difficult decisions at otherwise well-managed organizations. More typical examples of organizational incompetence, let alone scandalous business practices, are virtually not found. For example, in spite of the enormous relevance of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 to management and organization challenges, as well as the evidence of organizational politicking and incompetence, few if any teaching cases have examined the events or outcome of 911.
Because organizations are open systems, they represent complex challenges that require sensitivity to the uniqueness of the situation and to frequently competing interests and perspectives. We propose that manager training should foster good conversations in business settings that help managers be aware of the moral and ethical dimensions of their decisions and actions. Such conversations should help organizational members to surface the complexity and ethical dimensions of competing interests, as well as the dilemmas and doubts of their own activities.
Whereas most teaching cases focus on managers and tend to be oblivious to other groups or ways of ‘seeing’ the problem, Darkside cases acknowledge the diversity of actors and interests. Darkside cases allow for the development of judgement, the ability to synthesize, integrate, and balance short-term and long-term effects, as well as to appreciate the effect on different groups. Darkside cases are also a chance to give voice to the frustration of working for poorly managed organizations, to the increasingly difficult environment for union organizing rights and workers’ voice, and to the broader system of business and how it permits, encourages, and even forces organizations to do terrible things.
· This is a team assignment. Teams will work in full and equal collaboration and each member of the group is expected to do his/her share. Peer evaluations will be conducted upon the completion of the assignment which may impact individual grades for the assignment (both presentation and paper).
· The written report should be approximately 10 pages in length (double spaced, 12 point Times Roman), plus a reference section.
· The team video should be between 5 and 10minutes and no more than 12 minutes. You should expect to answer questions for up to 5 minutes following your presentation. No more than 30% of the video may be taken from other sources (i.e. news clips, YouTube videos, etc.).
· The case must include evidence that you have read the text, academic and practitioner articles or books on your chosen topic as they pertain to the models and theories that are useful in the analysis of the case.
· Your video presentation will be made to class in the last week of the semester.
Outline of your paper:
1. The questions you intend to investigate:
As an example, How can we use self-concept to better appreciate the actors’ roles in “The Devil Wears Prada”?.
2. At least three scholarly references that address the topic
3. At least three practitioner and/or popular media references that address the topics
4. A rough outline of the paper – titles, headings, topics, etc.
Use the following questions to help you analyze the case:
1. What does the success or failure of this organization/event tell us about the importance of studying organizational behaviour?
2. Provide a list of the key factors associated with the success or failure.
3. Discuss the contribution of three to five organizational concepts from your text as it relates to the success or failure.
4. Give an overall outline of the success or failure of the organization/event, provide a detailed explanation of what you would recommend to repeat the success, or avoid the failure/disaster in the future.
Evaluation of the report (60%)
The overall report will be judged according to six broad criteria:
1. Utilization of relevant concepts and theories
2. Application of concepts, models, and theories
3. Problem identification and development (don’t be too ambitious here.)
4. Critique
5. Presentation (grammar, spelling, references, overall organization of the report)
