Does language affect the way we think

My topic is “Does language affect the way we think”. The reason why I am interested in researching is because language actually affects our life-styles and way of thinking a lot. I think our culture, our thought habits and our language grown together and affects each other. So there will be lots of valuable question for this topic.

My key cultural consultants for interview will be international students and bilingual or multilingual speakers. Because they can tell how can language affects the way they think and their life-styles. Why I think this topic is anthropological is because language is closely bound up with our daily life, though habits. In my opinion, language more likely a filter of our thought but doesn’t change the way how we think. As a bilingual speaker, i feel like it makes me understand and learn about a new culture but not changing our overall mindset. The story I want is as a bilingual speaker from different culture, when I speak English in US, I don’t feel my mind is affected by different language I am speaking. But I will consider few times before I say anything.

This topic related to the Lea tire that I learnt during week 4 “How language shapes thought? This is the topic which I have biggest interest in, I feel like our language or culture might affect the way we think, but I think its guiding instead of changing the way how you think. ” The main group that I am going to interview on are the students and bilingual speakers. In college, most of the international students can speak more than 1 or 2 languages. I believe students who have multilingual experiences can tell some of their personal experiences or how do they think about being a multilingual speaker.

3. Do you feel confident and comfortable when you are speaking another language? Or how you feel different when you speak different language?
4. Can you fully express yourself in another language? Can you express your emotion and attitude when you are not speaking your first language?
5. Which language you use most frequently in daily basis?
6. When you both experiencing western and eastern education and use different language, does it shape your identity?
7. When someone speak your native language to you in foreign country does that make you feel closer to that person or will you change you thought on that person.
8. Many people say language does affect the way we think we are like another person when we speak another language. but others say language is just a filter of our thought, what do you think about this debate? Which one you agree more?
9. Does your personality change or will you consider twice before you say anything when you using different language?
10. Does people treat you different when you speak different language?
