Everyone is responsible for reading this Chapter 5 and answering the posted questions.  Please do not ignore this assignment.

  • Study the organizational structure of the prewriting, outline and sample essay posted on Moodle.  Sample Essay is also posted. (observe and imitate).
  • Also, study (observe and imitate) the Template for the argument essay that I have posted under Handouts.
  • Study (observe and imitate) the sample argumentative essay posted under Handouts.

Writing Topics: Argumentation-Persuasion- Choose one of the topics below; then follow the instructions and format at the end of this list of topics.

  11. Should pre-teens and teenagers be treated as adults for violent crimes
  12. Should cigarettes and other tobacco products be outlawed?
  13. If you prefer to write on a topic that is not on this list, I must approve it.

Directions:

  • Using your approved topic, identify your audience, purpose, and tone.
  • First, write a preliminary proposition statement. Proposition (thesis) is the main idea sentence of the essay. Follow directions of writing a proposition (argumentative thesis sentence) or emulate one of the samples I have posted
  • Then, begin by writing a brainstorm list.  Write everything that comes to your mind.
  • Next, examine your brainstorm list for similar reasons and ideas.
  • Now, write a group brainstorm list where you write a pro and con list from your original brainstorming. List as many reasons as you possible can as to why you believe as you do. Then list all of the reasons some people will disagree with you.
  • Make sure you double space, save and print it. Be sure to save everything on a disk or jump drive.
  • .  Then select three of your strongest reasons (if you have that many) and the strongest reason/s of your opposition.
  • Do Step 6. Write you proposition and topic sentences for each of your reasons; then write a topic sentence for the opposition’s reason. Follow the format below (observe and imitate):
  • Explain each of your reasons, including the opposition.
  • Then research each of your reason to find evidence to support your reasons and explanations.
  • Select one of the introductory methods posted or in your textbook to write your introduction.
  • Select one of the conclusion methods posted or in your textbook to write your conclusion.
  • Following the instructions I have posted, write your first draft.
  • Following instruction posted, revise, edit, and proofread. You should do at least three separate revisions.
  • Using MLA format create a Works Cited Page.
