Answer all of these questions, and please number them:
GEORGE ORWELL – WHY I WRITE:
1) You know who George Orwell is, the author of the novels Animal Farm and 1984, and we have earlier read his nonfiction piece, “A Hanging.” In “Why I Write,” Orwell writes about the reasons why he wrote Animal Farm, among his many works. From this essay, it is clear that he wrote it after having published Animal Farm (1945) but before he wrote 1984, because he makes no mention of it! (1984 was published in 1949.) Orwell died in 1950, so this is very late in his life, and contains his philosophy of writing.
Your Question #1: What does Orwell say is the most important reason why he writes? Find the line or lines in the piece and quote them in support of your opinion.
2) Why was this Orwell’s philosophy? What was going on in the world during his time that shaped his philosophy of writing, and that became the major themes of his two classic novels (Animal Farm and 1984)? (If you cannot glean this information from the article, itself, you can certainly look it up.)
ROXANE GAY- THE PRICE OF BLACK AMERICA:
3) This piece is completely different from Orwell’s piece, that is true. But there is something in Gay’s piece that speaks to Orwell’s writing philosophy. Find the connection and discuss how these two pieces are related. Use short quotations from each piece to support your opinion.
PROMPT:
Begin with this line: Chris began to question the wisdom of this trip.
(You can change the name, of course:)
