Submit an original post reflecting on the content of chapter 2. Include a brief definition of genre, a comment on the key features of scholarly articles as a genre, and then answer the following questions:
- What surprised you most? What confused you most? Why?
- In earlier levels of school, were you taught anything that looks like the “rhetorical reading” described in this chapter? IF so, what things were you encouraged to pay attention to that look similar to aspects of rhetorical reading?
- This chapter argues that meaning is not “built into” texts, but that instead a readers makes meaning by bringing together what a text says and a number of other elements. What are those other elements? Can you suggest examples from your own experience that show this argument is accurate? Do other examples from your experience suggest it’s not?
Post an original 500-word reflection following the prompt/instructions above, and then reply to at least two classmates’ original posts with substantive feedback (additional 50 words per reply). Your reply to a classmate may focus on what ideas called your attention and why, what questions you still have after reading their post, what ideas or sources may connect to their post, or a comment on how their post’s concepts may be applied to your experience. Be mindful of your virtual tone as you engage with each other.
