Hypotheses, Data Considerations, and Study Variables
Part I: In this last unit of the course, you will incorporate what you have learned thus far and prepare the initial sections of an applied research proposal. Based on this week’s readings, explain three critical characteristics of sound research questions.
Remind your classmates of the research problem you are proposing to study and post at least three potential hypotheses you could test in your study. Incorporate what you learned from the readings in terms of the format of the hypothesis, and identify your key independent and dependent variables.
Part II: Describe the general approach (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods) you will take in your research proposal. Fully explain why you chose this approach and how it is the most effective way to test your proposed study hypothesis or hypotheses.
This is the Problem Statement
Problem Statement
The disproportionate use of force during de-escalation policies on stop-and-frisk has been
the trending issue by the NYPD in the US. It is well-known that community policing is an
outstanding achievement in the US. Still, the unreasonable stop-and-frisk has proven that it
contributes a lot to the rising number of brutal murders that are caused by the application of
excessive force and unreasonable firing on offenders by NYPD officers who are mandated to
practice stop-and-frisk for the sake of beefing up security (Ponte Carvalho & Duarte, 2018). This
study aims at analyzing the do’s and don’ts of stop-and-frisk by NYPD for the sake of ending
systemic racism, discrimination, and racial profiling as much as NYPD focuses on enhancing
security and improving community relations. Stop-and-frisk is an effective way of preventing
crime. However, the annihilation of personal autonomy of a people challenges the enhancement
of community relations that is linked to the practice by the NYPD since a majority of people
claim that stop-and-frisk is overemphasized by most NYPD: specifically on people of color, thus
making most blacks and Hispanic Americans to be rendered criminals due (Chu et al., 2016).
The study subjects will be residents in New York and NYPD members in the neighborhood
patrol regions for 30 days.
