From the simple single melodies of chant to the extreme variety of music styles available today, music has evolved over centuries. Our music today is a result of many different cultural influences and mechanical advances through time. Today we can listen to or participate in music of any genre imaginable. We have come a long way! People can and do enjoy the music from all the different historical periods today. Once a musical style develops, it doesn’t go away, it just evolves into another style. There are always musicians striving to come up with different ways to express themselves as well as those who work to preserve traditions. This experimentation is important to the evolution and perpetuation of the art of music.
Determine what new trends, styles, or characteristics you hear in the music of today. Consider all genres of music, not just popular ones. Someone may take an old idea and rework it for modern sensibilities. Or there might be something brand new emerging. Describe what you find and respond to at least two classmates. Have fun!
