Questions:
- Why was capitalism in crisis after WWI?
- Discuss the quote below and discuss how the Italian council movement tried to break away from the two pillars of capital accumulation, i.e., from wage relations and private property of the means of production.
“The citizen, typical of bourgeois democracy, is an abstract individual, who is “Sovereign in theory, but in fact is only sovereign on the day of elections. All the rest of his time he is nothing but a subordinate to laws and rules drafted outside of his contribution.” Of course such a “political” servitude was founded upon an “economic servitude”. The inequality of economic conditions (or better of the positions within the relations of production) impedes any genuinely democratic relations amongst free and equal human beings. On the other hand, Zini wrote, the post-capitalist society will give rise to “a new man”— the conscious producer— that exercises at once economic and political freedom (“da cittadino a produttore,” 21 February 1920, year 1, n, 38, pp. 301-302)
