I’m working on a cultural studies discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
For this threaded discussion, I want us to use our sociological imagination to the fullest. Can a society function without inequality especially socioeconomic inequality? Can we ever have a society that is truly equal? To do this, I want us to assume the following:
1. EVERYONE…and I mean EVERYONE…wants to live in an equal society.
2. EVERYONE…and I mean EVERYONE…is willing to give up their personal privileges and wealth to achieve equality.
3. EVERYONE…and I mean EVERYONE…is willing to share equally in the spoils of their labor.
Think of it this way…Marx describes a communist society as one in which everyone takes only what they need and gives all that they can.
Can we achieve that society? Why or why not? Remember, we are in the hypothetical and we are using our sociological imagination so construct your argument accordingly. Do some research online as to the strengths and limitations of a Marxist communistic society–this is VERY different than N. Korea, China, Cuba or the old USSR so be sure to focus your discussion/research on the Marxist type.
