You will build your first essay, the Personal Career Narrative, over the course of these first four weeks. Here is how we’ll approach it:
- Week 1: Introduction to the personal career narrative assignment and the Occupational Outlook Handbook (Links to an external site.). In Week 1, you will submit Investigating My Career, an assignment which will help you begin collecting the necessary information to build your paper.
- Week 2: Introduction to summarizing, paraphrasing, and directly quoting. In Week 2, you will work with and practice writing about the information collected in Week 2. Be sure to utilize the feedback you receive from your instructor each week to help guide you into the next week.
- Week 3: Personal Career Narrative draft. In Week 3, you will write your first draft and receive feedback. Your writing is not expected to be perfect this week. The point of drafting is to get something out on paper, take a break from it, and then come back with fresh eyes and helpful feedback for revision.
- Week 4: Personal Career Narrative final. In Week 4, you’ll revise and polish to submit your final version.
Taking this process-approach will enable you to devote time to investigate and deepen your understanding of your chosen field in order to effectively write about it.
Remember that a narrative is a story, and so your personal career narrative should tell a story about who you are. In it, you will also express where you’ve come from, how you’ve been drawn to South College and to your particular major, and where you hope this major will take you in the future.
