Define the “racial wealth divide”

Answer the following questions to the best of your ability, based on your individual understanding of the class readings. Substantiate your claims by citing relevant text passages. Your response must be your own, original wording. If you have studied with others or used someone else’s notes or answers to prepare, disclose their name/s at the top of your answers together with your name, the class name, and date of submission.

Remember: Always cite, even when paraphrasing a text, or when using your own, previously submitted work. Substantiate your claims about a text by using direct quotes from it. The more specific you are, the better your grade will probably be. There is no need to do additional research (in other words, stick to the texts from class in your answers). Each component of each question has equal value. Make sure to answer all components of each question to get full points. I provide guidelines for length in each individual prompt, but you are ALWAYS welcome to write more than the specified minimum.

Task 1 [ expected length: at least 4 paragraphs]: Define what the “racial wealth divide” is according to Lui in “Overview: The Roots of the Racial Wealth Divide.” In a second step, explain why Lui calls on readers to focus on not just ending poverty, but on fighting the racial wealth divide instead. In a third step, choose one of the groups that Lui provides snapshots for (whites, African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, or Native Americans [these are his terms, not mine, and you can choose to describe these groups of people using terms that are more appropriate in contemporary times]), and summarize how the racial wealth divide developed for them. Include specific examples from the historical timelines Lui provides. In a final step, explain why Lui cautions her readers about universal solutions. What is her argument against universal solutions? How have they historically worked out? For each step you should write at least one full paragraph.
