Essay 1

Write an essay entitled “What does my culture define/mean to me – Who I Am ?

– Example 1:

I am a mutt. Meaning that I don’t identify with any solid nationality. Yes, I am white but this is a just color pigment of my skin, it is a race just as generalized as any other. Meaning not all white people, black people, Latin people, Asians are of the same nationality because of their color, just as how I’m not very Irish even though I have red hair. (I’m sorry. I’m giving you a hard time about this) Being a mutt means that my nationality is so split that I can’t really claim any particular culture or country: I’m welsh, German, Polish, French, Scottish-Irish. I grew up in Atlanta, GA and there definitely was not a lot of “hot” culture going on like hip-hop. My first musical event was and oldies radio station festival for lake of better word where I saw the “Beach Boys” playing in their mid 50’s-60’s. As I entered my teenage years I listened to what was on there radio, what was recommended or listened by friends, and what I found on the internet using P2P networks like Napster, Kazaa, etc. ……I’m a cultural mutt what I can claim only.

– Example 2:

I grew up listening to rap music and break dancing. It was considered “hot” in the South Bronx…Both arts are aggressive. They’re about competition and gaining attention. Both arts started at what we called “jams”. They are parties found on the streets, in parks, or in community or dance clubs. Break dancing dealt with at least two people who faced each other and did “moves” while everyone else formed a circle and either cheered or booed. The audience really determined the winner by cheering one on more than the other. The festivity could get embarrassing for the one who “got served” or lost, and it sometimes led to fights. Rapping basically worked on the same principle, but verbally and musically. Violence wasn’t so much the style of the art, nor the goal. It would only happen from time to time because of the audience members the festivity would draw, and because of drugs.

With these two arts, I think style here is saying “look at me, I can dance–so give me attention.” “Listen to my story, about myself, life, and romance; and listen while I tell it to the beat of the music. There’s poetry here, and I’ll tell you anything to music without missing a beat.
